Oakwood Friends, Poughkeepsie, NY

Oakwood is an independent Quaker school occupying a large green campus above Poughkeepsie NY. Leo J. Blackman Architects was asked to undertake two separate planning exercises for the school. The first was a layout and massing study for a proposed new fine and performing arts center. Located at the center of the site with a gabled roof reflective of many older Oakwood structures, the arts building was intended to contain a 250-seat theater, music rehearsal space, and art studios. Two options were provided, plus two budgets.

The second project consisted of a phased series of campus interventions. These were intended to improve auto and pedestrian circulation, better define exterior quadrangle spaces, upgrade faculty & student housing and consolidate maintenance facilities. Goals were to be accomplished with modest construction and landscape projects, to impose clarity on an aggregated collection of buildings and plantings.
