Mountain Ridge Country Club, West Caldwell, New Jersey

Mountain Ridge Country Club erected a spectacular Moorish-revival club house on their handsome property in the 1920s. Their board commissioned us to design a new café and locker room adjacent to their swimming pool in a style compatible with the club house. It would replace a non-descript existing structure with one made of naturally durable materials like wood and masonry. As a seasonal shelter, the design focused on energy conservation and minimal maintenance. The kitchen and restrooms are located underground to take advantage of the naturally cool temperature of the earth. The café -- with its high roof, ceiling fans, skylights and large, operable windows -- offers abundant natural light and ventilation.
