Leo J. Blackman, RA has nearly 35 years of experience with design and construction in and around New York City and the lower Hudson Valley. Leo graduated with a B.A. from Brown University, and an M.Arch. (emphasis on historic preservation) from Columbia University in 1981. He established Leo J. Blackman Architects in Manhattan in 1987, and has since relocated to Upstate New York. Leo has long been active with politics and preservation issues in both the city and country. He’s served as president of the Board of the Historic Districts Council (the umbrella for 500 neighborhood groups across the five boroughs), and chair of the Zoning Board of Appeals in upstate Amenia NY.
Established in Manhattan in 1987, Leo J. Blackman offers a full range architectural services. We typically serve institutional clients — independent schools and churches — with Landmark properties. But we have taken on a range of projects, including not-for-profit office space and residential work. We are uniquely sensitive to content and context as generators of architectural form. We consider not only program, but way-finding, neighborhood environment, client culture & historical style. Our diverse portfolio of projects includes rural campus master plans and a 24,000 square foot urban school addition, modern country houses and historic city apartments, church restorations and synagogue master plans. Leo J. Blackman brings both the big-picture creativity and sharp focus to detail necessary to succeed in leading a design from conception to completion. Our small firm size allows for the personal involvement of the principals, often missing in larger offices.
